What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the day when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved individuals were now free. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially abolished slavery in Confederate states effective January 1, 1863. The delayed news of freedom reaching Texas underscores the complexities and challenges of emancipation in different parts of the country. He mentions how only about 500,000 enslaved men and women actually got their freedom from the Emancipation Proclamation, compared to roughly 3.9 million African-American slaves projected in the United States.
Today Juneteenth, or June 19th, is officially known and federally recognized as ‘Freedom Day’.
