Shrink wrapping is a packaging process used by logistics companies to secure and protect products during storage and transportation. This method involves wrapping products in a clear, plastic film that is then subjected to heat, causing the film to shrink tightly around the items. 

1. Preparation of Items

Sorting and Organizing: Products are sorted and organized based on size, shape, and packaging requirements. Delicate or fragile items may need additional protective packaging before shrink wrapping.

Assembly: Items that will be packaged together are assembled. This could include grouping individual items into multipacks or arranging products on a pallet for bulk transportation.

2. Selection of Shrink Wrap Material

Material Type: The appropriate type of shrink wrap film is selected based on the product’s needs. Polyolefin is commonly used for food products due to its clarity and FDA approval, while PVC or polyethylene might be used for heavier industrial items.

Thickness and Strength: The film’s thickness (measured in gauge) is chosen based on the level of protection required and the product’s weight.

3. Wrapping Process

Manual Wrapping: For small batches or uniquely shaped items, workers may manually wrap the film around the products. This often involves a handheld heat gun to shrink the film.

Automated Machinery: For larger volumes, automatic or semi-automatic shrink wrap machines are used. These machines can wrap, seal, and apply heat to the film in a continuous process, significantly increasing efficiency.

4. Heat Application

Tunnel or Chamber: After wrapping, the products pass through a heat tunnel or chamber where hot air is circulated, causing the shrink wrap film to contract tightly around the items.

Handheld Heat Gun: For manual processes, a handheld heat gun is used to carefully apply heat to the shrink wrap, ensuring it contracts evenly without damaging the product.

5. Quality Check and Finishing

Inspection: After shrinking, each package is inspected to ensure the wrap is tight and free from tears or weak spots. This ensures the product is adequately protected.

Final Touches: Any necessary labels, including shipping labels, barcodes, or handling instructions, are applied over the shrink wrap.

6. Packaging for Transport

Palletizing: Shrink-wrapped items, especially those prepared in bulk, are often palletized for easier handling and transport. Additional stretch wrap may be used to secure the entire pallet.
